This Institute would provide a knowledge base for the advancement of critical understanding of design and entrepreneurship in craft sector. It would develop and offer new and appropriate solutions and prototypes that respond to emerging market opportunities. This process will further provide meaningful careers for craftspeople and professionals trained at the UPID. The Institute will also help in development and expansion of the cultural creative industry in the State.

For the handicrafts artisans across both urban and rural centres,  handicrafts and handloom provide livelihood opportunities that give them identity and a sense of pride. The Institute would help in strengthening the craft base by dissemination of design and expanding the entrepreneurial understanding in the crafts sector. The shift towards an improvement in the quality of opportunities for the craftspeople at decentralized locations is a long-term result that will accrue through sustained activities at the Institute.

UPID would endeavour to work as an interface between person trained at institute and entrepreneurs,exporters,designers etc. and assist in the placement of students & crafts persons acquired training through UPID. The institute  will also serve as an Incubator for selected trainees who wish to setup their own enterprises under the mentorship of UPID faculty.
